How Does March Madness Work?

In a nutshell, the NCAA's annual collegiate basketball tournament runs from mid-March to early April. After Selection Sunday, the “First Four” teams will square off. The First Four will begin on March 15-16 and include four preliminary matches before the ultimate game, which will take place on April 4.

These “First Four” teams are playing each other to get into the NCAA Tournament. After the four teams are eliminated, the remaining teams will join the other 64 and get ready to battle it out.

The 64 teams are divided into four 16-team brackets, with groups usually separated by location and organized by seed. Teams that are stronger receive a lower-number seed, whereas weaker teams get a higher number seed. However, don't be fooled by the rankings; there will be plenty of surprises, shockers, and Cinderella stories throughout the tournament.
